Pringle Falls Association: Trails and Bridges

In 2001, I was contracted by the Wild River Homeowners' association to build a trail system and bridges. A flimsy temporary bridge had been built 60 feet over Pringle Falls for the filming of "Rooster Cogburn" in 1974 and had been left. I stripped the bridge down to the steel railroad car box beam and rebuilt the entire structure. I installed stainless steel cables and turnbuckles to take the sag out of the bridge and to keep the structure from twisting. The work was done in January, and fresh snow had to be swept off the structure many mornings. Saws, welder and other tools were run from a generator, and I commuted to the job from the nearest plowed road on snowshoes.

The trail system had never been established, and people were trampling a lot of sensitive plants. I established a trail and built several small footbridges using logs from trees in the area, and recycled wood from the original bridge. Several of the residents helped me move the logs into place. This was one of the most fun and rewarding projects I have ever undertaken. I would love the opportunity to do more work like this.
